Reagan - 2 Years Old

Happy Birthday, Reagan!

Life is non-stop with a two year old! As tiring as having a newborn can be, I think I'm more exhausted after spending time with her! Reagan has changed so much in the last few months. Looking back to the pictures from this summer, I can't believe how much older she looks. Here are some of the highlights of having a two year old:

  • She is learning to dress herself. She can put her shoes on by herself (usually on the right feet). She puts her arms in the armholes of her jacket and flips it over her head ("Like William") and is pretty good at pulling her pants on most of the way.
  • Reagan is great at singing. I can't believe all the words she knows to so many songs. Some of my favorites include "Single Ladies," "Catch the Moon," "Mickey Mouse Club," "Rock and Roll," "Beautiful Day," and "Happy and You Know It."
  • She still loves to read books. Right now we're hooked on "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie," "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," "Where the Wild Things Are," and the "Baby Reagan" book. She has started to repeat portions of the book back to us and sometimes says the right words with the right page.
  • Reagan is definitely a talker. Her sentences get longer and longer every day. We can understand probably 75% of what she is saying, but I don't think anyone else can. She was able to tell our neighbor, Kim, exactly what happened to her balloon (although Kim may not have understood it all).
  • Some of Reagan's words are a bit off. John and I think it's cute, but hopefully we aren't encouraging her too much to say things wrong. Milk is "Nilk." Snow is "No" which leads to snowman being "noman." Some 's' sounds change to 'f' as in fwing and fweater ("swing" and "sweater"). And for some reason, she has developed a Swedish accent when she says 'school.'
  • Things are starting to stick in Reagan's memory. Reagan will say something out of the blue that she must have heard somewhere or remembered from something. We hear "Need share with Ani" and "Play nice with Owen" a lot, so we're assuming that she hears those two things a lot at school, which isn't necessarily a good thing!
  • She's learning about consequences. We had been giving her time outs in the crib, but when we found out she was enjoying it a bit too much and took the time to just jump, we switched to the steps. Now, Reagan will throw a tantrum and say "I need to sit on steps" before we can dish out the punishment. We still have to put here there (she doesn't go by herself) but once she's on the step, she doesn't move.
  • Reagan has just started the transition into a big girl bed. The first few days were touch and go and ended with John reassembling the crib at 4am. With five days down, we're starting to think the big girl bed is a keeper. Although we need to put up a gate . . .
  • Reagan loves playing in the water. At school, her teachers can't keep her away from the kid sized bathroom sinks. She loves to stand on her stool at home and wash her hands and brush her teeth. She really loves the water table at school and only once has she needed her spare outfit because she got too wet.
  • She's one smart cookie. Reagan can sing the ABCs, count to 20 and has started to draw circles, but when it comes to colors, everything is blue. I guess we know what we need to work on!
  • Reagan loves Elmo, and Cookie Monster and Big Bird and Abby (Ca)Dabby (You get the picture). Elmo has come in handy now that baby brother is around. When Reagan wants to help, she can do whatever I'm doing with brother to Elmo (that has included breastfeeding Elmo on her belly button!)
  • Reagan has no fear. She definitely takes after her dad in her personality. At gymnastics, she has no problem walking the high balance beam with barely a hand on her. She also loves to hang and drop from the bars, even the high bar. She loves to be thrown up in the air, loves to jump high and loves to have her dad swing her around the living room. As long as she's moving, she's a happy kid!

2 Years Old!!!

On November 14, Reagan turned 2. So, she got to celebrate with 2 parties! The first was actually on Saturday the 14th. We had Nana, Papa, Grandma, Papa Mac, Auntie Phyllis and Uncle Frank over for dinner, cake & ice cream.

Reagan certainly got to understand birthday=cake! And she was a happy girl.

We got Reagan a "Little Tikes" kitchen for her present. Lindsay had a toy kitchen when she was growing up too. So, I can say that a toy kitchen is not a predictive indicator of one's cooking prowess...

We didn't actually get a photo of Papa Mac with Reagan (but I'm sure Grandma and Papa Mac have one). We'll have to settle for a photo with Dylan.

Grandma & the Birthday Girl!

On Sunday, we had Party #2, this time at "The Little Gym" where Reagan goes to gymnastics every Saturday morning. There was plenty to do there!

After playing, we had pizza and cupcakes to celebrate!

Jump-a-roo!

Just to see what would happen, I put Dylan in the Jumperoo the other day while Reagan was napping and he loved it!

Not quite sure yet, but it looks fun!

I like this, Mommy! Here I go!

We have a small problem now that the Jumperoo is officially in use again. Reagan wants her turn in it and constantly says "Now Reagan's turn" when Dylan is in there. She looks so big compared to him on the rare occasion we let her go in there. Too bad she doesn't understand that she's already had her turn.

4 Months Old

I can't believe Dylan is four months old already! The time is just rushing by! I'm sure I'll say that every month, but he just seems so much older now!

Here's Dylan's official weigh in:

13 lbs. 10 oz.
24 5/8 inches

Some fun things at 4 months old:
  • Yes, his hair still sticks up and yes, it is still a mohawk! A long mohawk!
  • Dylan mastered rolling from his back to his tummy just last week! It has caused us some sleepless nights in the McCarthy household because he gets mad when he gets stuck on his stomach and Mommy is worried about SIDS.
  • Dylan is a little laugher. His favorite game is peek a boo. When he's not laughing he's at least smiling (unless he's hungry). He is such a happy little boy!
  • Dylan is quite content with his thumb or nothing at all. I especially love when he falls asleep sucking his thumb.
  • Dylan discovered his feet and all the fun they bring. He loves to hold on to his socks and is fascinated by his feet when his socks are off.
  • His voice is getting louder and louder. He seems to be imitating some of the tantrums we've seen lately, only he usually has a smile on his face.
  • On a normal night, when we're not working on rolling over, Dylan still wakes up every 3 hours. According to our doctor, we need to work on that and try to get him to sleep through the night (or at least 6-8 hours without eating). It's so hard when he's in our room, because we hear him the minute he wakes up. We try to grab him before we have two kids awake.

So big!

Did you see my feet?!

Happy Halloween

This picture actually doesn't have much to do with Halloween whatsoever. I just wanted to show Reagan enjoying sugar pre-holiday.

On Thursday night, we carved pumpkins. Reagan's pumpkin was carved with an Elmo! It was surprisingly difficult to carve the round eyeballs and nose with a straight knife. We made the most of it and the pumpkin actually looks a bit like Elmo.

For the actual event, Reagan was dressed up as a ladybug.

Dylan was a monkey. And an awfully good one at that.

Here is the trio: Mommy was a mummy...get it?

On Halloween, we went over to the Lehman house for a while. They had cupcakes too! As you can see, Reagan once again enjoyed the treat!

Earlier this week, Reagan and her friend Sophia went to the Minnesota Children's Museum for a trick or treat session. This is just a picture of the two friends.
